A Perspective on Industrial Large Eddy Simulation Using High-Order Methods

Abstract:The promise of large eddy simulation (LES) has been known for manydecades, and its application to real world flow problems, however, has beenhindered by its computational cost. Although the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) approach has gained wide acceptance in industry, many applications stillcall for scale-resolving simulations such LES or hybrid RANS/LES approaches.
Inthis talk, I will highlight some of our efforts in pushing high order methodstowards turbo-machinery and aero-acoustic applications:
•High order space-discretizationcapable of handling unstructured meshes
•Efficient and scalable timeintegration
•Overset and sliding meshalgorithms
•Parallel implementation onextreme-scale CPU/GPU computers
Inaddition, I will describe the application of the high-order LES tool, hpMusic,in computing vortex-dominated turbulent flows in turbomachinery andaero-acoustic noise computation. The talk will conclude with possible futurework.
