1965年6月美国陆军提出坦克和重型车辆用1103kW(1500马力)燃气轮机发展计划。1965年10月陆军选定阿夫柯·莱卡明（现改为达信-莱卡明）公司的以直升机涡轮螺旋桨发动机为基础的设计方案，并签定30台样机的研制合同，该机定名为AGT-1500。
